Together with humans, gorillas, and orangutans, chimpanzees are part of the family Hominidae (the great apes). Chimpanzees are endangered and are not found in the wild in Kenya, but have been rescued and brought there to be cared for by the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Chimpanzees can be found from Southern Senegal across the forested belt north of the Congo River to Western Uganda and Western Tanzania.
